An infection happens when germs like bacteria, viruses, or fungi get into your body and start to grow. It can start in one area and sometimes spread, causing things like fever or other health issues.. Usually, your immune system plays an important role in fighting off these germs.

Why does it matter for teens?

Teens are especially at risk for infections as they are involved in many social activities such as sharing sports gear or sharing drinks. Understanding how these infections spread allow teens to protect themselves and build a good foundation leading into adulthood. In this way, they will develop an understanding of when to manage hygiene or when to visit a doctor.

“Or a sudden pink eye during finals week?”

Well, here’s what might be going on…

A sore throat can be a sign of an infection caused by bacteria. A sharp pain when swallowing or swollen tonsils can be a sign of this infection. Similarly, pink eye is caused by bacteria that affects the eye. This type of infection can spread easily through direct contact to contaminated surfaces.
